Gleinalm tunnel - from now on also a "tunnel with ears"

On July 21, 2017, the ceremonial opening of the second Gleinalm tunnel tube of the Pyhrn freeway took place. After almost four years of construction, this tunnel - equipped with state-of-the-art safety technology - is now open to traffic.

"AKUT® - Acoustic Tunnel Monitoring", developed by JOANNEUM RESEARCH DIGITAL detects events faster - even two minutes faster than conventional technologies. The microphones in the tunnel never stop listening and react immediately: critical events are detected acoustically via the microphones installed in the tunnel. Unusual sounds are detected and an alarm signal is sent to the control room within 0.7 seconds. The operators in the control room can then decide what immediate measures to initiate
